The 3 R's

Recycle Reuse Repurpose.

I often see items that could be used for my homestead, yet most the time
I pass on it due to the cost feasibility of transporting it to nevada.
Does any one know if the construction barrels can be used for non
potable water storage? What about for solar power the bus stop solar
panels that provide lights at night? Or the construction signs with the
light bulbs? Do those use solar or a battery? They run for days or
months never seen anyone do work on them. What about the orange flashing
lights on construction barrels? How do they keep flashing? We have many
auctions in florida and I could get these items for next to nothing. But
again cost feasibility in transporting them to nevada.

Captains log march 6th 2010

Had a few days to think about some ideas in phases.

Phase 1. Find my land and the corner markers of my 20 acres.
Phase 2. I will be in a tent until I erect my shed. With help from Mike,
should not be in tent more then 1 or 2 days.
Phase 3. Fix entrance road to my land, after the shed is erected then I
will look for a trailer or a storage container.
Phase 4. Then I will erect a chicken and duck coops for fresh eggs and
birds to eat.
Phase 5. Erect small structures out of recycled products to see the
durability of each.
Phase 6. I start digging my ponds before winter comes so when the snow
melts my ponds will be filled hopefully.
Phase 7. Fence work will begin so I can start getting goats.
Phase 8. Plant trees I saw in magazine that claims they will grow 5 feet
per year in nevada. Surround my home with them to prove shad for
structure with in 2 years.

Storage container inputs

Thanks for all the help in the debate. I am on a shoe string budget and
all the help is great. I was prepared to live in a tent until I built
something better. Then I got the shed to erect as a better structure.
Then the storage container seemed like a great idea until the delivery
fee was involved. I can get pop up campers and pull behind campers
rather cheap that aren't in the best shape. But the unknown factor is
will they even survive the 2500 mile trek to nevada. Still don't even
know if the f150 truck would make it there. I think the truck would, but
now the tires are suspect. Its like fighting an uphill battle with every
new idea. Just need to get there and figure it all out later. Just paid
another $70 in storage fees for my nevada supplies again.

Serious Debate now

Seriously debating which is better in the long run, a purchased container and the $500 delivery fee, or the rental of $500 plus $70 a month. $2500 upfront to purchase and then pay for delivery on top of that just doesn't seem to make financial sense to me. I think with $2500 up front I would be able to buy a very good rv or mobile home or a trailer of some sorts. The $70 a month rental would elminate my need to store stuff in storage each month but it would cost $500 to drive there to drop off the stuff. Catch 22 every idea I come up with.

Goat wagons and carts

how much can a goat pull or haul on its back? I saw carts and wagons
made for goats. Wondering if during the fall I should have goat wagon
rides with tumble weeds instead of hay. Maybe in December drive through
town behind 12 goats dress like reindeer? So many ideas, yet not there
yet in the valley...

Glorious morning news

Thanks preston and bill for scouting my land while you were in montello.
It was awesome news to wake up to today. Pilot valley road is a solid
for driving and once a ditch is filled in the road to my land will be
easy for a container truck to make it. The great debat will be $500 down
and $70 a month or buy outright. I still think renting is the easy
affordable option but buying outright would save money in the long run.
In 2032 will be the last payment on my land and I will be mortgage free.
Apparently there are a couple of mountains rev mike wants to go explore
with me when I get there. I just can't wait..

Possible outhouse bathroom

Might have found an outhouse for my ranch. Plastic 4x6 ft storage shed
with a window and sky light. Room for my solar shower and my camping
toilet. Might even be big enough for a bathtub as well. Should be an
easy assembly and quick shelter to live in until I get my main shed up
and assembled. The price is a bit much if its only going to be my
outhouse/bathroom.

Nevada tv shows

Love seeing anything about nevada on tv. Learning a lot about the entire
state. Learned about the nevada triangle today. 2000 plans crashed or
vanished since world war 2. Is area 51 to blame? Montello is not in the
triangle of nevada so no plane crashes in our area.

GPS COORDINATES

41°10'7.09"N, 114° 8'23.16"W   I do not know if these are the same GPS i had before, but today its showing where my property should be. the other digits i had were showing up near old motel road. it could just be an issue with google maps.

Pollution Starry Sky Night

When you sit at night looking for stars can you see them through the smog and lights? One day I hope this farmer will see them very soon

Finally shelter maybe

I found a pop up camper with a new axle and tires for $350. The canvas
is gone. I was thinking once it gets to montello wall it in to make it a
mini cabin. Any one else think that's doable?

Saturday Morning

It is saturday morning. Waiting for info on my florida land I almost
bought last year. It never sold in all this time. If he finally gives
some info on how to find it off the road I may go visit it tomorrow. I
have driven through the area its pretty area. Just hope he gives
directions before this evening comes. I've switched back to my tmobile
sidekick so there is no more spam from att when I send updates via my
cell phone, this also allows me longer updates. I hope everyone has a
good weekend.

HOW BIG IS 20 ACRES OF LAND?

One acre is equivalent to:
* 200 parked cars
* three quarters of an American football field, which is 160 feet (48.5 m) wide and 360 feet (109.1 m) long (1.32 acres)

20 acres is equal to 871,200 Square feet of land. Its a mind blowing number to me. A house I use to live in was 1100 sq ft.. That is 792 houses I could fit in 20 acres.

Just imagine, the fish ponds I was thinking of, is only 60sq ft. I could fit over 14,520 fish ponds.

So many years of life yet, so many projects I could fit onto my land.

Well Drilling Information Update

A follower of my blog named Sandy sent some info about well drilling. $48 a foot covers miles and all the stuff. Nevada requires 100 foot minimum to be drilled. Doing math on that is $4800. Says as long as it is not in the hills 125 to 180 feet and you should hit water.

Man Made Pond Research

I am going to do some more research on the whole man made pond, but i believe my original plans called for kiddie pool as a way to catch my solar shower waste water. If I can use a bigger pool and make fish ponds or just water storage ponds that would be even better. The whole 20 acres is going to be great because it leaves lots of space to try new ideas and plans to try more stuff put without worrying about needing more space. I have visited cracker country at the fair before it shows how people did stuff back in the old days. Their designs were simple yet effective. I've taken notes on how to make very strong rope from simple twine. It looks like it might be a 3 person job but I'm sure I can adapt it to do it my self. Does not take long to make a 6ft rope with their method. I'm thinking I could possibly with enough time on my land possibly make a whole fence out of the rope. Probably not effective with 20acres but we shall see.

12x2 Fish Pond

A 12x2 foot swimming pool can be used to raise a worthwhile amount of fish. Stock a pound of fingerlings in 1 cubic foot of water. Have to figure out how many cubic feet are in a pond of that size. He also mentions you can use very cheap dry cat food to feed the fish because it's the same nutrients in the fish food. This would also provide entertainment for days with nothing else to do but go fishing at the monkey bone fishing hole.

Home Made Pond

According to countryside magazine of modern homesteading. HM RANCHING in northern nevada built a pond in the desert. He used a back hoe to make his pond covered it in 8mil plastic sheets. He then waited for rain to fill it or waited for snowfall. I hope to have my pond plans in place before fall 2010 so the snow will fill my pond plans. Seems to be the smartest way to fill them. Hopefully with the dirt I dig up I will just leave it in a hill or mound and hopefully use it as a sledding or snowboarding rub next winter for entertainment exercise time.

Good News Bad News

Good news, I found a storage container company that will rent me a container for $70 a month, $500 total to haul it there.

Semi bad news, wont just let me rent to own, its either pay cash for it, plus shipping or rent it by the month infinite amount of time. If I only use it to store my stuff, and sleep in, I really think its a good deal.

The really bad news is, can a semi truck make it down the road to my land and drop it off where I wish to have it dropped off at. If that is a guaranteed answer, I would def jump on the deal.

Even at $70 a month to rent it, that makes that and my land only $210 a month. Way less then the rent I pay now. Plus I wouldn't have to keep payng storage here to store my supplies I have already.

I wasn't really planning to modifying the cargo container if I bought one, I like the whole concept of just closing the door, and the security that affords.

UPDATED: Found on Pilot Valley Road

PILOT VALLEY, Nev. — Elko County sheriff’s detectives are investigating the discovery of a body found Thursday in Pilot Valley, Nev., between Montello and West Wendover.

Undersheriff Doug Gailey said detectives confirmed a body was found wrapped in black plastic and secured with duct tape. The body is about 5 feet, 5 inches tall, but Gailey said he did not know the gender.

Gailey said communication with detectives has been difficult because of a lack of reliable cell phone service at the scene.

Gailey said his office was called by someone about noon Thursday. He did not know where the body was located in relation to a roadway.

Nuclear Waste Site???

Was briefly scared and angry while I was watching the TV show CASH CAB and one answer was what is the name of the nuclear waste site in the northern nevada mountains. Upon further research it is no where near montello, its just north of las vegas!! Yucca Mountain Thanks to the guy from CowBoy Cafe who told me he never heard of it!!! I'll make sure I eat a burger when I get to town. Also President Obama eliminated it from his budget this year!!! Thank you President

One Day

One day I will not be woke up by a moron with a leaf blower at an apartment complex at 730am. One night I will not hear helicopters flying overhead to hospitals. One day I will be able to watch tv at night and not hear trains blowing their horns. One day I will be able to go to the store and not sit in traffic for an hour. One day I will be able to sleep in peace and quiet.
One day i will not be woke up by the city life, but by country life. No morons at an apartment complex using leaf blowers

Earthquake in Haiti Might Change Building plans

I have been rethinking of my structures to be built. Earthquakes can be devastating, I do not think Nevada has alot of them. But I do not want my dream to end under my structure. I know my shed I bought from LOWES is hurricane rated, but I do not know the earthquake ratings. I do not think my tents would be affected by an earthquake, but I know the winds may affect them. I really think the storage containers are a great way to go, as i do not think steel would shake apart. My only concern is the cost of them. Im sure I probably could have got one for the same price as my shed, but my fear was the cost of transporting one to montello to my land. I am going to do some more research before my move.

Moving Date Has Changed

I've decided, that due to some relationship drama, that its best if I move to montello long before October date. I'm going to empty my storage unit, of all my supplies I originally bought and just start driving to pilot valley. Hopefully I will be able to hook up with Rev Mike, my closest neighbor and hopefully new best friend. If I live and make it, then great, if I fall to the wayside like other pioneers of years past, oh well. I have a dream and I can not let my dream die, no matter how much it hurts to lose the love of my life. I deserve to be happy, and away from people. Why should I not pursue my dreams.
